An extraordinary tree grows in this city, steeped in culture. In Mirabell Park, we found the old catalba (cigar tree), which seems to be reigning to happening around it. The tree is branching into incredible shapes, bending towards the ground and turning into a playground for children. To preserve its remarkable presence, it was supported by a decorated concrete pillar. The sight of the tree made us realize that its branches attract many children into its woody arms and thus creating a new interaction between people and nature.

From this Salzburg tree, I have collected pieces of bark to make a cast for a bracelet; and transformed the stem of a fallen leaf into a pendant for a necklace. We played Mozart’s “Eine kleine Nachtmusik” to the tree.

A rare plant initially called “Fleischmannov rebrinec” (Plastinaca sativa) once grew indigenously on the hillside of Ljubljana’s castle. The walking path which leads from the city to the castle is named after this extinct endemic. The plant belongs to the species of parsnip and is considered extinct in the wild. It is only kept alive in the Botanical Garden and is named after its discoverer, Andrew Fleischmann.

As a sign of respect for this protected plant, we did not pick it it for the Music City Bracelet project, yet created a 3D scan from which a cast of nature was made. In honor of “Fleischmannov rebrinec,” we played the song “Nad mestom se dani” (Jože Privšek) in the Botanical Garden.

Klagenfurt / Celovec. The famous Lake Vrbsko JEZERO is located next to the city and attracts many  people to nature’s embrace every year. During our walk along the water, my attention was drawn to the weeds growing out of the pier. It is called yellow hawkweed (Hieracium caespitosum) or, in German, Wiesen-Habichtskraut. I have chosen the two flower buds, which also became casts for a musical city bracelet.

Although our primary premise is that nature belongs to no one but itself, this particular part of the earth, Klagenfurt-Celovec, is clearly a meeting point of two cultures and two languages (German and Slovenian). That’s why we called this part of the project “Bilingual Plant” or “Zweisprachige Pflanze.” In honor of the weed, we played a Carinthian folk song, “Rož, Podjuna, Zila,” which tells the story of the three valleys in Austrian Carinthia where Slovenians live.

The city center is a mix of the city on and under the hill. The part on the hill is called “Stari grad” (the Old city) and represents the old center of the town. As we strolled along the cobbled streets, ancient grape ivy plants (Parthenocissus tricuspidata) kept us company. These have reigned on the walls of buildings since time immemorial, growing wherever they pleased. Grape ivy plants on buildings act as green insulators, protecting against the heat in the summer and purifying the air. 

In our search for the right fruit of the wild grape ivy, which attracts plenty of birds, I came up with the idea of mixing the young and the old, the new and the traditional, yesterday and tomorrow. So I picked two fruits – one fresh and firm, the other dried and SHRIVELED BUT BOTH STILL FULL OF LIFE. I found the fruits in an abandoned garden with a beautiful view of Zagreb and played the song “Moj Zagreb tak imam te rad” (Ivica Šerfezi).

Romantic Venice is sinking in front of our eyes as the water level rises. As part of the Musical City Bracelet project, we searched for a plant that will be submerged by the water of Venice’s canals in the future, giving it a chance to exist in the form of jewelry. We chose a simple and edible plant, the Rock samphires (Crithmum maritimum), which grew from a canal near the Giardini della Biennale.

I have named the plant “the future climate migrant” and played the piece La Bellezza (Roberto Vecchioni).

The Venetian Future Climate Migrant is available in the form of a unique brooch, a unisex bracelet, and a necklace.

This vigorous, evergreen plant is a relentless grower that covers and climbs everything and anything it encounters. It’s a native of East Asia and is found on Japan’s southern islands, in eastern China, and in Vietnam.  The name of the species is derived from the Latin word pumilus, which translates to dwarf and refers to the miniature heart-shaped leaves produced by the plant. Creeping fig reminds us to follow our own purpose as we have the ability to change the direction of our life no matter the circumstances. 

Properties:  While not known to have any specific properties, it’s commonly consumed in certain asian countries made into a refreshing juice or a jello.

The leaves of this tree are very distinctive, one side is dark green and the underside is light, almost white. This dichotomy between darkness and light didn’t go unnoticed by our predecessors. In Greco-Roman mythology, Leuke was one of the most beautiful Oceanid nymphs, a daughter of the Titan Oceanus. The story goes that Hades fell in love with her and took her to the underworld. She stayed there for the rest of her life and after her death, Hades turned her into a sacred white poplar tree. The tree also has ties with Heracles, who is said to receive a white poplar crown after his heroic return from the underworld. 

Properties:  In alternative medicine, white poplar is said to have astringent, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory qualities
